Studio AWA was founded in Edinburgh in 2018 by architect Anya Wilson, with the idea of creating a small architectural practice where every project could receive a high level of personal attention.
After many years working in larger architectural practices, I wanted to bring that experience to residential projects and work more closely with the people who would ultimately live in the spaces I was designing.
Today, Studio AWA works with homeowners to transform existing properties and create new homes, combining creative thinking with practical experience to make the most of each project.
We work best with clients who value good design, are open to exploring ideas and want to be part of an enjoyable, collaborative process. You don’t need to know exactly what you want when you come to us; developing the brief together is part of the process.
Studio AWA is a small practice, so you’ll work directly with Anya throughout. Depending on your project, we bring in trusted consultants and specialists when their expertise is needed, coordinating the team around your design.
We balance creative thinking with practical considerations including budget, buildability and the long-term value of the decisions we make, helping you create a home that works beautifully for the way you want to live.
Before setting up Studio AWA, I spent more than 20 years working in architectural practice in Edinburgh and London. My experience spans residential, education and public projects, from carefully considered alterations to complex, award-winning buildings.
Setting up Studio AWA gave me the opportunity to bring that breadth of experience to residential architecture and to work much more closely with the people I design for. I enjoy the combination of creative thinking and practical problem-solving that comes with transforming an existing home, as well as the opportunity to design something completely new.
Sustainability has been an important part of my work throughout my career, and I’m interested in creating homes that are comfortable, energy-conscious and designed to serve their owners well over the long term.
I’m an ARB Registered Architect and RIAS Chartered Architect, and am also involved with ECAN, the Edinburgh Chartered Architects Network, and SEDA, the Scottish Ecological Design Association.
Creating a self-build home for my own family is a long-held ambition, so I understand the excitement, possibilities and big decisions that come with designing and building your own home.
